Just take a stroll on a terrace at 6pm: its neon orange color is everywhere. But the real history of the Spritz goes back to the 19th century, in the Venice region.

Back then, the region was under Austrian occupation. Austrian soldiers, used to beer, found Italian wines far too strong. So they'd ask tavern keepers to add a splash of sparkling water (spritzen in German) to cut it.

It wasn't until the early 20th century that the recipe really took off, when the Italians added a bitter made from bitter orange peel and herbs. The modern Spritz was born: a clever blend of military history and Italian know-how!
